Pompeii

Most people know of the story of ancient Pompeii - a well off city that was destroyed by an eruption at Mt. Vesuvius. Fortunately for us, the mountain was quiet during our visit. The ruins of Pompeii are pretty cool to see. Most of the really amazing murals, statues, and mosaics have been moved to the archaeological museum in Naples (and I got there to see those). However, there are still wonderful ruins to see that include bakeries, food service areas, theaters, brothels, bathes, and homes. You can still see the ruts in the stone streets. Outside the city walls, burial sites have been found in the bedrock that the city is built upon. We spent about 2 hours touring Pompeii and it went by really quick. We didn't see it all either, it's quite a large area. It's definitely worth visiting if you ever get to Italy.
