I was recently in Chicago for Neocon - the big interior design World's Trade Fair. It's basically a huge commercial furniture show held at the Chicago Merchandise Mart each year. It's usually a welcome break from work and it's interesting to see all the newest furnishings, fabrics, and materials in person. I try to go every few years. Chicago is a great town to visit and I always enjoy exploring. This trip was pretty cool because our group happened upon a movie being filmed right on the City streets. We were walking back to our hotel after a long day at the Mart and all of sudden there were old 1930's cars everywhere and people shepperding us from one corner to the next to "stay out of the shot". Shot? What was going on. Someone in the crowd filled us in...the filming of a scene for the new Johnny Depp movie, Public Enemies. He plays notorious 1930's bank robber John Dillinger. How cool! So a co-worker and I stuck around. We watched them film the scene twice. Johnny Depp cooling gets out of his black car, pulls two pistols from his pockets and walks towards a building behind his posse' who are toting long guns. We only could get as close as about 1/2 block from Johnny Depp and we only had cell phone cameras. But a girl in the crowd was nice enough to email us these photos she took with her digital camera - still a bit blurry, but you get the picture. I've never seen a movie being filmed so it was fun to find it at 5pm in the middle of downtown Chicago. The other cool part, right behind Depp's car is the restaurant we ate in the night before. The area is full of trendy restaurants and Starbuck's, but all that was covered up for the filming of the movie. By the next morning the street was back to it's usual self.
